The Huey is a low cost monitor calibration solution and lacks the advanced features of the better systems. For some customers it does deliver an improvement in on screen colour but most users should consider spending slightly more on a Spyder or EyeOne Display solution.

  • Easy to use software
  • Ambient light compensation
  • Windows & Mac compatible

Huey brings monitor calibration within the reach (both in terms of cost and ease of use) to almost everyone. Now you have be sure that your monitor is displaying the best colour whether you are viewing or editing digital photographs, watching dvd movies, graphic design, playing games or simply web browsing.

Why do you need Huey? Because every monitor displays colour slightly differently – just go into a computer store or TV shop and you'll see that the same picture looks quite different on each and every screen – so which one is the right one?

Why does it matter to have accurate colour on screen – my screen looks good enough to me? If you're just looking at photos or movies on your computer and you think everything looks OK, then maybe you don't need Huey. But what if you want to get some photos printed using an online service and they come back looking not quite as you expected? Or what about if you send your mates some holiday pictures and those beach shots look more vibrant on their computer screen than yours? Or what if you are a graphic designer and a client has just refused to pay for a job because it's come back from the printer looking different than you thought it would? Or do DVDs look very dark on your monitor, so you end up having to adjust screen settings each time? Huey will sort all this out!

How does Huey work? Huey is a little bit of hardware, about 10cm tall that comes with software to control it. Just plug Huey in to a USB port and run the software. You'll place Huey on your screen and the software will display a series of colours – for each colour Huey tells the software what colour it is actually 'seeing' and compares this to the colour your monitor 'thinks' it is showing. Once the software knows the differences it can make adjustments to your monitor so it is now displaying colours as they should be.

But it doesn't stop there. Huey comes with a handy stand that enables it to sit by your computer and constantly measures the ambient or background lighting, changing your screen as the light in your room changes.

What 'Colour Temperature' does Huey calibrate to? If you know what colour temperatures are, then you know a bit about colour management and we'd probably say Huey is not the right product for you as you don't get those choices in the software. Huey enables you to choose 'warmer' or 'cooler' settings, along with optimised settings for photography, web browsing, graphic design, movies and games. If you need more control, or consider yourself a 'professional' user, or is someone whose job and reputation depend on highly accurate colour then you should look at a product such as the Eye-One Display 2 from GretagMacbeth.

Why is the Huey so much cheaper than say, the Eye-One Display? Huey is aimed at a different market segment, and to an extent, you get what you pay for. The Eye-One Display is a higher quality device, provides more flexibility and ultimately produces better results and more accurate colours on screen, as demanded by semi-pro and pro photographers and graphic designers. Huey junks the jargon and does a great job, simply and quickly for people who want a better 'colour experience'. If you are unsure which product to buy, why not call us for a chat?
