Colour Management & Adobe CS5 (04/06/2010)

Adobe Creative Suite 5

It’s that time of year again when Adobe release another version of their Creative Suite. We don’t have the space to give you a full review of CS5 but we will outline here what has changed or stayed the same in terms of colour management.

Photoshop

Photoshop is obviously the most crucial application in most colour managed workflows. The first difference I found is the addition of new Color Settings presets, Europe General Purpose 3 and Europe Prepress 3. Both of these use FOGRA39 as the CMYK working space rather than FOGRA27 like Europe Prepress 2 and Europe General Purpose 2 but are otherwise the same. The updated CMYK working space reflects common working practice in the print industry. The only other change in Color Settings is that it doesn’t warn you if Photoshop is not synchronized with the rest of the suite like CS4 did.

CS4 on Mac OS 10.6 suffered from various bugs, most of which were solved by the 10.6.3 update but one remained on my system. Photoshop did not seem to use the profile of my second monitor correctly. This issue has been solved by CS5. Both monitor profiles are now used correctly.

The Assign Profile and Convert to Profile commands are unchanged. As are the options under View/Proof Setup. My printer profiles made under CS4 work perfectly indicating no change to the printing system. The colour management element of Camera RAW is also unchanged but elements such as better noise reduction, more cameras supported and simulated film grain have been added.

Other general improvements such as adding a rule of thirds grid to the crop tool to enhance composition, a new Lens Correction filter, more advanced brushes, HDR toning and content aware fills that make it easier to remove items from shots all make CS5 a worthwhile rather than must have upgrade. Do a Google search for Photoshop CS5 Review and you’ll get plenty of hits.

Illustrator and InDesign

When I launched InDesign it had an entirely random set of Color Settings selected, even though I had gone into Bridge and set Creative Suite Color Settings all to Europe Prepress 3 and it reported that it had synchronized them, so be sure to check the colour settings in Indesign. Adobe seems to have gotten rid of a peculiar bug that crept into an update of the previous version that meant it only saw profiles from the Adobe profiles directory and not in the OS level profiles directory. Otherwise nothing has changed as far as colour management in InDesign CS5, including the fact that it uses a different printing system to the rest of the suite so you can use the same RGB inkjet profiles for InDesign as you could for Photoshop. I can’t see any changes to colour management in Illustrator, apart from obviously sharing the new Europe 3 colour settings.

Practical Colour Management

We are about to start writing the third edition of our very popular colour management guide Practical Colour Management. If you have any suggestions for what we could include, improve or omit please drop Rob Griffith an email at rgriffith@nativedigital.co.uk. The new edition should be released in the autumn.
